Most of Salisbury sits on sand. Water runs straight through it, and so does everything you want the plant to keep. A bed that looks established in May can be gasping by mid July, because there is nothing down there holding moisture.
The fix is not more watering. It is compost worked into the bed at planting and enough mulch to shade the root zone. Skip that step on sand and you are signing up to replace plants in year two.

Salt and wind narrow the list
Closer to the beach you get salt in the air and wind with nothing standing in its way. Ornamentals that do beautifully in Merrimac will brown off on the windward side here and never quite recover.
What holds up: bayberry, beach plum, rosa rugosa, juniper, switchgrass, little bluestem, inkberry. It is a shorter list than inland, but it is a list of things that actually live.
Near the marsh, check before you dig
Massachusetts puts a 100-foot buffer zone around bordering vegetated wetlands, and a good deal of Salisbury sits near marsh or creek. Work inside that buffer, including regrading and some drainage work, goes in front of the Conservation Commission.

Spring and fall both work. On sand, fall planting tends to establish better because the plant is not fighting to hold water through its first July.
