Most of downtown Newburyport sits inside a National Register historic district. That listing is an honour, not a rulebook. It does not control what you plant, what you pave, or what fence you put up on your own property.
The district that does carry rules is the city’s Local Historic District, and it covers Fruit Street. If you are on it, exterior and site work goes in front of the commission. If you are not, and most people are not, you can stop worrying about it.

Down by the water it is a different yard
Joppa Flats and the streets closest to the Merrimack sit low, drain slowly, and get salt air off the river. Beds that work fine up the hill sit wet there through spring.
Newburyport has also asked residents to cut back outdoor water use in recent dry summers, most recently in 2025. Worth knowing before you put in a new lawn in July, because a new seeding needs water at exactly the wrong time of year.

Can you get equipment into my back yard?
Sometimes. Plenty of Newburyport houses have no driveway and a gate under three feet, which rules out anything on tracks. When that happens we barrow material in by hand. It is slower and it costs more, so we would rather find out on the walkthrough than on the morning we start.
How much does landscaping cost in Newburyport?
Depends more on access than on size. A small bed with easy access can be cheaper than a smaller one we have to hand-carry to. We measure, look at how we get in, and put a firm number in writing.
My yard near the water stays wet. Can that be fixed?
Usually. The streets closest to the Merrimack sit low and drain slowly, and beds down there hold water into spring. Regrading and a French drain fix most of it. We will tell you honestly if the water is coming from somewhere we cannot control.

Do you do patios and walls on small lots?
Yes, and tight access is the normal condition here rather than the exception. Walkways, small patios, and low retaining walls all work on a city lot. Materials sometimes have to come in by hand, which we will price honestly up front.
When's the best time to plant here?
Spring and fall both work. Fall is underrated. The one thing to watch is a new lawn in midsummer, since the city has asked residents to cut outdoor water use in recent dry summers and new seed needs water exactly when it is least available.
What payment methods do you take?
Most clients keep a card on file. We also take ACH and check. Projects run on a deposit up front and the balance at completion.
